Improving the Visibility of Education Research in Francophone Africa
This report focuses on the ecosystem of education research produced in French in Africa, highlighting its relevance for researchers, journals and policymakers operating in this context. It also identifies three Pilot Initiatives crucial to strengthening French-language education research in Africa.
Despite its critical role in informing education policy and practice, French-language research in education in Africa remains constrained in volume, fragmented across publication platforms, and difficult to access. As ESSA-REAL Centre mapping research has shown, education research in Francophone Africa is largely invisible across major dissemination platforms and is consequently under-represented in global knowledge systems and insufficiently integrated into policymaking processes.
For policymakers and funders, the limited visibility of French-language education research is not only a technical dissemination issue but also a systemic constraint that limits the use of locally relevant evidence in African education systems. Therefore, addressing these barriers strategically could present a high-leverage systems investment opportunity, rather than a narrow publication issue.
