Attending the Writing for Publication in High Impact Journals Workshop: A Turning Point in My Research Journey

Participating in the “Writing for Publication in High Impact Journals” workshop organised by ESSA, REAL Centre, Kenyatta University, and Compare Journal in Nairobi, Kenya, transformed how I approach and communicate my research.

I left not only with enhanced methodological skills, but with a clearer understanding of how to position my work for wider influence. I now confidently apply these approaches in my projects, particularly in refining research questions and structuring arguments for publication. The collaborative atmosphere and networking opportunities also stood out, reminding me that research is not done in isolation, but thrives through shared learning and exchange. 

One crucial insight I gained was the value of patience in the peer review process. When an article returns to me, I now take time to reflect more critically before responding to reviewers’ feedback. I am also more attentive to the fundamentals: adhering to word counts, selecting appropriate journals, and understanding the reasons behind desk rejections.

A key takeaway that continues to shape my thinking is: “Your data may be local, but your argument should travel.” This insight reframed how I think about relevance, challenging me to ensure that my research speaks beyond its immediate context and contributes to broader conversations.

The sessions also deepened my understanding of plagiarism in its many forms and clarified the complementary roles of editors and researchers. Editors strengthen clarity and accessibility, while researchers drive curiosity and innovation. Together, they ensure that knowledge is both rigorously developed and effectively communicated.

The true highlight for me was learning that impactful research sits at the intersection of creativity, precision, and human effort. It requires patience, collaboration, and dedication to making ideas meaningful. 

Overall, this workshop has reshaped how I see my role as a researcher, not just as a producer of knowledge, but as a communicator of ideas that matter. 

We invite fellow researchers to invest not only in what they research, but in how they communicate it, because that is where research begins to influence policy and practice.
