Developing Educational Leaders

Managing the level of change required throughout education systems in Africa would be a daunting prospect to the most experienced and highly trained leader, even with the resources that they need at their disposal. Trying to do this with often less than adequate resources but absolutely no leadership development or training sounds like mission impossible.

Across the world there are excellent programmes for developing leaders but there aren’t so may that are open or affordable to those who are trying to manage huge change in education whether they be operating at a school or Higher Education institution level or at a regional or national level.

There are thousands of NGOS boosting the work of education systems across Africa and many are growing rapidly but again their leaders often receive little in the way of leadership or management development.

General leadership programmes clearly help and increasingly, en-lighten and progressive, governments and foundations and social impact investors are encouraging and supporting the leaders they depend upon to take part in these programmes. Yet few are fully contextualised for education or have real African case studies from the sector. As a result it can be hard for participants to take their learning and apply it to the situations that they face on the ground.

We want to change this and although it is very early days we have had encouraging responses from our partners, leading business schools, foundations and social impact investors to our ideas. We also think that as well as being able to deliver local programmes involving peer learning that with Open ESSA we might be able to make relevant and engaging  content which delivers a high impact accessible digitally.
