About
Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann is a Ghanaian academic, academic administrator, biomedical engineer and the current host of the National Science and Math Quiz. With a teaching career that began in 2001 at the University of Ghana, she is an Associate Professor and Founding Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
Initially joining the Department of Physics, Professor Kaufmann also provided support in teaching at the Dental School and the newly formed Department of Physiotherapy. Between 2001 and 2006, she played a vital role in the University of Ghana committees that prepared proposals for establishing the Departments of Physiotherapy, Radiography, Audiology, and Medical Physics. In addition, she served on the planning committee for the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, now known as the School of Engineering Sciences.
Professor Kaufmann's expertise extends beyond her work at the University of Ghana. In 2021, she dedicated her time as a Visiting Scholar and Founding Head of the Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, Ghana. Before joining the University of Ghana, she gained experience as a teaching assistant at the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States of America and as a research supervisor at the Chemistry Department of Rutgers University in New Jersey.
In addition to her academic roles, Professor Kaufmann serves as a member of the Council at the Ghana Communication Technology University. Her impressive career trajectory led her to assume the position of the first female dean of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana in August 2022.
