Welcome to the African Education Research Database (AERD) - your source for comprehensive education research by Africa-based researchers.
This Database hosts over 6,000 peer-reviewed publications from 48 Sub-Saharan Africa countries, covering these themes: Phase of Education; Access to Education; Students, Learning & Assessment; Equitable, Inclusive Education; Teachers and Teaching; Language & Curriculum; Institutional Leadership, Culture & Facilities; ICT; Policy & Financing and Foundational Learning
It was developed by the Research for Equitable Access and Learning Centre at the University of Cambridge, in partnership with Education Sub Saharan Africa.
The goal of this Database is to enhance the visibility and accessibility of high-quality education research from scholars in sub-Saharan Africa to influence education policy and practice in the region.
Over the last few years, the AERD has secured its position as the 'go-to' platform for education research in Africa and beyond. It has been used to inform research, policy, programming, and practice. For example, the AERD is used by Institute for Educational Planning–UNESCO in its advice to education ministers. Graduate students also use it to identify research gaps on specific topics such as education and planning issues. Lastly, researchers also use the AERD for systematic reviews of research evidence in the region, as well as for academic publication articles based on bibliometric analyses to explore the landscape of African education research.
How to navigate

Launch your browser of choice (e.g., Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari, etc.) and type in ‘African Education Research Database’ in the search engine. A window will open where the AERD is available, select. Alternatively, you can go directly to https://essa-africa.org/AERD.

Once on the main page of the database, you can search by one of the two main search buttons, Basic Search or Advanced Search.
The Basic Search allows you to filter for thematic areas, country, methods, language, and year. It also allows you to search publications that are free to download through the access filter.
While the Advanced Search allows you to do what you can do in the basic search except for searching thematic areas. However, you can do more complex searches such as multiple countries and keywords. For example, if you want a paper that addresses learning outcomes and teaching methods, it allows you to select the two keywords. Alternatively, you can type search terms in the search box.
