Izel Kipruto is the Director of Strategic Communications at ESSA. She leads how the organisation is understood, trusted, and valued by governments, funders, researchers, and the public across Africa and globally. Working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, other Directors, and teams across ESSA, she shapes clear and compelling communications that turn African education research into action, influencing policy, practice, and public debate to improve outcomes for young people. 

She oversees the organisation’s communications strategy and its implementation across platforms, ensuring ESSA speaks with one strong, consistent voice and that its evidence reaches the right audiences and informs decision-making at national, regional, and global levels. 

Izel brings more than 15 years of experience in research communications. At ESSA, she has elevated the organisation’s profile, increased the visibility of African education research and researchers, strengthened internal communications, secured funding, and expanded media and digital engagement, positioning communications as a core driver of organisational impact. 

Previously, she led advocacy and communications at the PAL Network, Twaweza East Africa and Uwezo Kenya, where she helped shape global, regional, and national conversations on citizen-led assessments and improving children’s learning outcomes. 

Izel holds a Master of Science in Education Management from Strathmore University, a Bachelor of Education (Arts) from Egerton University, and a Certificate in Civic Leadership from Kansas State University. She is a 2017 Mandela Washington Fellow of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).
